Mini_DV6 glow system

Glow system, component functions:

The glow system implements the preglowing. The ”preglowing” considerably improves the starting capability of the diesel engine at low temperatures. The heat contribution is made by the glow plugs into the individual cylinders. In cold cylinders, the compression pressure and thus the temperature of the air in the cylinder is low. The present MINI diesel engine uses an electronic combustion preheating control module; this is not integrated in the diesel engine management system but rather in a rectangular (approx. 70 mm x 30 mm x 30 mm) external component. This combustion preheating control module uses internal power electronics to control the heat output of the four glow plugs in the individual cylinders. The principal phases of the glow process are as follows:

Service instructions and component information:

An 8-pin combustion preheating control module is fitted in the present engine. Viewed in the direction of travel, the installation location is on the right-hand side adjacent to the exhaust gas recirculation hose. The following target values apply:

Diagnosis instructions:

The diagnosis of the glow system meets the requirements in accordance with on-board diagnosis.
