Repair instructions for rattling rear side window

Complaint

The customer complains about a rattling noise from the area of the rear side window while the vehicle is being driven. In individual cases, a hard slamming noise can occur on closing the rear side window.

Note

When the rear side windows are opened by a small gap (approx. 5 cm), the noise is no longer present.

Vehicles concerned

Vehicles in the production period 01.04.2004 - 12.08.2005.

Cause

Possible cause is a broken window seal on the convertible top frame. This means that the top mounting bolt can come loose and collide with the side window. See Fig. 1.

Repair instruction

Replace the rear seal in accordance with repair instruction RA5434343. Also replace the top mounting bolt.

Note

In order to be able to fit the new mounting bolt in the seal holder, the present thread must be reduced in size from M5 to M4 by fitting a helicoil insert. See Fig. 2.
Use the seals repair kit.

Series solution

For vehicles as of production week 32/2005, modified seals have been fitted.
