Rear entertainment system

Rear entertainment system

The Rear Entertainment system enables image output from the rear display control unit and video module on 2 screens. Both screens are 12.1" wide. The Rear Entertainment system is operated via the rear controller.

Brief description of components

The following components are described for the rear entertainment system:

SG-FD: Control unit for rear display

For the rear display control unit the following is displayed on the RR diagnosis system:

The rear display control unit is supplied with a number of data formats. Digital data packets, e.g. travel guides, are supplied via a MOST interface. The control signal come via the data bus K-CAN SYSTEM.

The rear display control unit generates digital picture data. The digital picture data is transferred across an LVDS data line (Low Voltage Differential Signalling) to the multimedia box (MMB).

MMB: multimedia box

Firstly, the multimedia box (MMB) converts the RGB signal of the video module (VM) into an LVDS signal. Secondly, it processes the LVDS signal from the rear display control unit. This enables a resolution of 800 x 600 pixels for output on the rear displays.

The multimedia box is not diagnosis-capable. The MMB has no separate control unit address. The MMB only participates as a listener in the communication on the data bus K-CAN SYSTEM.

FD, FD2: Rear displays

The rear displays are integrated in the picnic tables on the backs of the backrests of the driver's seat (FD) and of the front passenger's seat (FD2). The rear displays are connected with the multimedia box by an LVDS data line (Low Voltage Differential Signalling) for graphical display.

The rear displays each have a photocell to measure the surrounding brightness. The back lighting of the screen is adapted to the surrounding brightness.

The rear displays are only self-diagnosable to a restricted degree: Only the switching off due to insufficient or excess temperature is documented in the fault code memory. In addition, the temperature LED lights up when the display is switched off due to temperature.

BZMF: rear centre console switch centre

In principle, the rear centre console switch centre has the same function as the front centre console switch centre. The switch blocks rear centre armrest and the headphone connection module are built into the BZMF.

FCON: Rear Controller

When the headphones are connected, the folding rear controller (FCON) is the operating unit. The Rear Controller controls the Rear Entertainment system functions at the Rear Display (FD) and Rear Display 2 (FD 2). If no headphones are connected, the overall function is operated at the front and rear. Operation and structure of the Rear Controller (FCON) are identical to those of the Controller in the front (CON). However, the functions for front and rear are different.

VM: Video module 5 Drive

The video module 5 Drive is the central processing unit for the video signals of the DVD changer and for the navigation device. However, the video module 5 Drive also ensures TV reception while driving. The video module 5 Drive is fitted with the Rear Entertainment system equipment instead of the video module 5.

For details, see separate functional description.

System functions

The following system functions are described for the rear entertainment system:

Commissioning

The rear displays (FD, FD2) can be started up when terminal R is active.

When the rear displays (FD, FD2) are supplied with voltage, the same display as at the front Central Information Display (CID) appears. The Rear Controller (FCON) can then be used to select a function.

Note! Operation with terminal 30

The rear displays (FD, FD 2) can also be operated with terminal 30. Here, the system must be activated by pressing volume knob on the Audio Display Panel (ADP). The volume knob switches the Audio Display Panel (ADP) and Audio System Controller (ASK) on and off.

Audio and video functions

The Rear Entertainment system enables operation of the following audio and video functions:

Setting the brightness

A photocell is built into the casing of the LC display for measurement of the surrounding brightness. The value determined by the photocell is compared with the set brightness values. If there is a difference between the values, the LC display is adapted to the ambient brightness by brightening or darkening. This process (dimming) ensures good readability of the LC display at all times.

Multi-user rules

The functions in the vehicle are provided by various control units. The users in the rear access the same control units as the users in the front. In order to prevent conflicts when accessing one function, rules have been laid down for certain functions (see: Headphone interface functions).

Image override

When required, the multimedia box overrides the image from the video module with the image from the rear display control unit (user interface). The user interface is centred with a resolution of 400 x 240 pixels, overlaying the image of the video module. Example:

Function limitations

To prevent damage, the rear displays are switched off at temperatures below -15 °C and above 70 °C. A red LED on the front of the screen indicates this protective measure.

If a certain voltage is not reached in the vehicle battery, the power module (PM) switches the 'Rear Entertainment' system off.
