The cooling of the present MINI diesel engine is controlled by a sensor-actuator combination, whereby the current temperature of the engine is delivered by a temperature-dependent resistor sensor. Active cooling is achieved by operation of the two-stage electric fan which cuts in automatically as required.
The engine temperature is indicated approximately by the coolant temperature. The sensing of the engine temperature is necessary for, among other things:
Service instructions and component information: Temperature sensor
A two-pin temperature sensor is fitted in the present engine. The installation location is on the top side of the engine towards the fresh air intake, directly behind the air filter. The following target values apply:
Diagnosis instructions:
To check the functionality of the electric fan, the test module <Engine cooling> / <Electric fan> as well as the control unit function <Component activation> / <Electric fan> can be used. If the activation does not cause the fan to rotate, it is highly likely that there is a cable or component defect.
